Dust, Smoke and Festival Crowds: A Gentle Ayurvedic Cleansing Routine for Your Skin

Dr Rucha Mehendale Pai

Dussehra, Diwali and the weeks that follow bring festive joy, but also dust from construction and traffic, smoke from firecrackers and crowded gatherings. Many people notice their skin feeling gritty, dull or sensitive in this season. Here is a gentle Ayurvedic cleansing routine to keep skin comfortable through the festive weeks, without harsh products.

How dust and smoke affect the skin

Particles in the air settle on the skin's surface, mix with sweat and oil, and can leave the skin feeling dull and clogged. People with sensitive skin may feel stinging or dryness. The aim of your routine is gentle cleansing, not scrubbing hard, which can leave skin more irritated.

The Ayurvedic principle: cleanse gently, nourish after

In Ayurveda, cleansing practices like udvartana, the gentle rubbing of herbal powders, are traditionally followed by nourishing the skin with oil, ghee or moisture. This pairing keeps skin clean without stripping it. It is also why ubtan has remained a household tradition during festivals.

A simple evening routine

Step 1: Rinse. Splash your face with cool or lukewarm water to remove loose dust. Avoid very hot water.

Step 2: Cleanse with ubtan, 2-3 times a week. Mix a little Navtej Varnya Ubtan with rose water or milk, apply a thin layer on face and neck, and remove it with wet fingertips while it is still slightly damp. Avoid the eye area and do not scrub. On other days, use a mild face wash that you know suits your skin. Ubtan inspired by the Varnya Mahakashaya concept in Charaka Samhita is traditionally used for skin care.

Step 3: Hydrate. After cleansing, apply Kumkumadi & Aloe Vera Hydrating Facial Gel, a light gel that combines aloe with Kumkumadi. It suits those who find oils heavy, or those with oily or combination skin.

Step 4: Protect. In the morning, use sunscreen if you are stepping out. Avoid touching your face during the day.

After a smoky evening

If you have been around firecrackers or heavy smoke, wash your face, rinse your eyes with clean water, and wash your hair if smoke has settled in it. Avoid rubbing your eyes. If you have asthma or breathing problems, take your doctor's advice and stay away from smoke. No skincare routine can protect your lungs.

Lifestyle habits that help

Drink water through the day. Warm water is traditionally preferred.

Eat fresh, light food. Include seasonal fruits and vegetables, and go easy on fried festive snacks.

Sleep well. Late nights during festivals show on the skin.

Keep towels and pillowcases clean. Change them often.

What to avoid

Avoid over-scrubbing, strong peels, and trying new products right before an event. Avoid lemon juice, which can irritate. Avoid using ubtan on broken or inflamed skin.

Hair and eyes also need care

Dust and smoke settle in the hair as well, so wash your hair regularly through the festive season, using a mild cleanser and lukewarm water. Rinse eyes with clean, cool water after dusty outings, and avoid rubbing them with your hands. Keep a clean handkerchief with you, and wash your hands before touching your face or eating.

Small Ayurvedic habits for the season

Ayurveda suggests adapting routine to the season. As the weather turns cooler and drier, many people benefit from a few minutes of oil massage before a bath, followed by a gentle ubtan wash. Try to keep your meals warm and freshly cooked, with a little ghee, and avoid very cold drinks. A calm evening ritual, such as a warm bath and early sleep, helps your skin recover after a busy day.

Remember that your skin reflects your general routine. Sleep, water, food and stress all show up on your face, so be kind to yourself during this busy season.

When to see a doctor

If you notice persistent redness, itching, swelling, rash, or if your eyes are red and painful after smoke exposure, consult a doctor. Do not self-treat skin conditions with home remedies alone.

FAQ

How often should I use ubtan?
Many people use it two to three times a week, depending on their skin. Dry or sensitive skin may prefer less.

Can I use the gel at night?
Yes, many people use it morning and night. If your skin is very dry, you may prefer a richer product.

Is ubtan suitable for sensitive skin?
Patch test first, mix with a gentle liquid, and use a thin layer for a short time.

Will this routine protect me from pollution?
It helps keep skin clean and comfortable, but it is not a shield against pollution. Limit exposure when you can.
