Drops of golden saffron face oil on fingertips above an open palm
Three or four golden drops: all it takes for the whole face.

Key takeaways

  • Kumkumadi Tailam is a classical saffron-led facial oil, traditionally used for a healthy glow and even-looking tone.
  • Three or four drops at night on slightly damp skin is enough.
  • Oily skin can use it too, in smaller amounts focused on the cheeks.
  • It layers beautifully with Shatadhauta Ghrita: oil first, ghee second.

Kumkumadi Tailam is the product I am asked about most, at the clinic, on WhatsApp and even at family weddings. "How many drops?" "Can I use it in the morning?" "My skin is oily, is it for me?" Here are the answers I give every week, gathered in one place.

What is Kumkumadi Tailam?

It is a classical Ayurvedic facial oil, named after Kumkuma (saffron), its key ingredient. Prepared by the Taila Paka method, in which herbs are slowly cooked into an oil base, it is traditionally used to support a healthy glow and an even-looking skin tone.

What do the classical texts say?

Kumkumadi has a long classical history.

From the classical texts

Kumkumadi Tailam is described in classical formularies such as the Bhaishajya Ratnavali as a facial application for the complexion (varnya). The Ashtanga Hridaya (Sutrasthana, Dinacharya) describes daily oil application as giving softness and lustre to the skin.

These passages describe traditional concepts, not modern medical claims.

How many drops should I use?

Three or four drops are enough for the face and neck. It is a concentrated oil, so a little goes a long way. Warm the drops between your palms and press them gently into the skin.

Is morning or night better?

Night is the traditional favourite. The skin has the whole night with the oil, free from makeup and sun. If you like, you can use one or two drops in the morning on very dry days, under a light layer.

Can oily skin use it?

Yes. Use two or three drops and focus on the cheeks and other drier areas. Many people with oily skin find that a little nourishing oil keeps their skin feeling more balanced.

Navtej Kumkumadi Tailam is prepared in the classical way with saffron. Use three or four drops at night on slightly damp skin, or as advised by your physician.

How does it work with other products?

It layers beautifully with Navtej Shatadhauta Ghrita: oil first on slightly damp skin, then a small amount of ghee to seal it in. It is also the first step of the Navtej Kumkumadi Skin Care Routine, alongside Kumkumadi Shatadhauta Ghrita and the Lip Elixir Balm. On ubtan days, use the ubtan first, rinse, then apply the oil.

When should you see a doctor?

Please see a doctor or dermatologist if you notice spreading or changing dark patches, painful or persistent breakouts, moles that change, or any redness, itching or irritation after using a product. These need proper evaluation. Patch test first on your inner forearm. If you have known skin allergies, a skin condition or are pregnant, consult your doctor before use, and never stop prescribed treatment.
