Saffron, lotus and rose: a few of the herbs that give Kumkumadi Tailam its golden colour.

Key takeaways

  • Kumkumadi Tailam is a classical saffron-based facial oil traditionally used to support natural radiance and an even-looking complexion.
  • Two to four drops are enough for the whole face and neck.
  • Night is the classical time to apply it, with a slow upward massage.
  • Most skin types can enjoy it with the right amount, and a patch test is the best first step.

A patient once brought a little bottle of Kumkumadi Tailam to my clinic and said, "My sister swears by it, my friend says it is only for dry skin, and the internet says ten different things. Doctor, how do I actually use it?" That question comes up so often that this guide brings together the answers in one place: what Kumkumadi Tailam is, which skin types enjoy it, and how to make it part of your everyday routine.

What is Kumkumadi Tailam?

"Kumkuma" means saffron and "tailam" means oil. Kumkumadi Tailam is a classical Ayurvedic facial oil in which saffron and a group of skin-loving herbs, such as manjishtha, sandalwood, lotus and licorice, are cooked into a base oil by the traditional taila paka method. The oil carries the qualities of every herb, which is why it is so prized in Ayurvedic skincare.

Dr Rucha's Navtej Kumkumadi Tailam is prepared with 16 traditional herbs and enriched with extra Kesar. It is traditionally used to support natural radiance, an even-looking complexion, nourishment and a smooth texture.

What do the classical texts say?

Ayurveda has always treated facial oil application as part of daily self-care.

From the classical texts

Classical Ayurvedic formularies describe Kumkumadi Tailam as an oil applied to the face to support its natural lustre (varnya). The Charaka Samhita (Sutrasthana) lists Manjishtha, Chandana and other herbs among the varnya group traditionally associated with the complexion.

These passages describe traditional concepts, not modern medical claims.

Which skin types enjoy it?

Dry and normal skin usually love Kumkumadi Tailam as a nightly ritual.

Combination skin does well with the oil on the cheeks, under-eyes and jawline, with a lighter touch on the forehead and nose.

Oily skin can enjoy it too. Start with two drops, two or three nights a week, and see how your skin feels.

Ayurveda looks at the doshas and the season rather than fixed skin labels, so the right amount for you may change between the humid monsoon and the dry winter.

How do you apply it?

Step 1: Cleanse

Wash your face with a gentle cleanser and pat it almost dry. Slightly damp skin helps the oil spread.

Step 2: Warm two to four drops

Rub the drops between your fingertips so the oil is slightly warm.

Step 3: Press, then massage

Press the oil into your cheeks, forehead, chin and neck, then massage in slow upward strokes for two or three minutes. A Kansa Wand or your fingertips both work beautifully.

Step 4: Let it rest

Leave it on overnight. In the morning, simply wash your face as usual.

Layering tip: water-based products such as a gel go first, and oil goes last. Kumkumadi Tailam pairs well with the Kumkumadi and Aloe Vera gel or a little Shatadhauta Ghrita on drier nights.

Who can use it?

Men enjoy it as a simple night step after cleansing, especially after shaving.

Teenagers can begin with gentle cleansing and sun protection, and introduce a concentrated facial oil after checking with a doctor or Ayurvedic practitioner.

Pregnant or breastfeeding women should talk to their gynecologist or Ayurvedic doctor before using any new herbal product, including facial oils.

Navtej Kumkumadi Tailam comes in a 10 ml bottle with a classical blend of 16 herbs and extra Kesar. Use two to four drops at night, or as advised by your physician.

When should you see a doctor?

Always patch test a new oil on the inner forearm for a day. Please see a dermatologist or Ayurvedic doctor if you notice persistent redness, itching, swelling or new breakouts, or if you have a diagnosed skin condition such as eczema, psoriasis or melasma. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, managing a long-term condition or taking medication, consult your doctor before adding a new herbal product, and never stop prescribed treatment.
