What Makes a Skincare Product Truly "Ayurvedic"? A Label-Reading Guide

"Ayurvedic" has become a popular label on everything from soaps to snacks. As a practicing Ayurvedic doctor, I'm often asked how to actually tell whether a product follows genuine Ayurvedic formulation principles, rather than just borrowing the word for marketing.

Question 1: Does It Name Actual Herbs, or Just Say "Herbal Extracts"?

Genuine classical formulations name their ingredients specifically — Kumkuma (saffron), Yashtimadhu (licorice), and so on — rather than hiding behind a vague "herbal blend." If a label can't tell you what's actually inside, that's worth questioning.

Question 2: Is There a Traditional Preparation Method Behind It?

Classical Ayurveda describes specific preparation methods — Taila Pak (oil-infusion), Shatadhauta (hundred-times washing), and others — that take time and can't be shortcut. A product that references its preparation method, not just its ingredient list, is generally following the tradition more closely.

Question 3: Are the Claims Reasonable?

This is often the biggest giveaway. Genuine Ayurvedic products describe what an ingredient is traditionally used for — "traditionally used to support skin nourishment," for instance — rather than promising guaranteed transformation in a fixed number of days. If a label promises fairness, instant results, or 100% side-effect-free use, that's a red flag rather than reassurance.

"Ayurvedic" isn't a protected term the way some regulated claims are, so a little label-reading goes a long way. When in doubt, ask the brand what preparation method they use and what each ingredient is traditionally for.
