For oily skin, the amount is what matters: a tiny dab, warmed between the fingertips.

Key takeaways

  • Shatadhauta Ghrita is ghee washed 100 times, which turns it into a light, whipped, cooling balm, very different from kitchen ghee.
  • Oily and combination skin can enjoy it by using a small amount, mainly at night.
  • Applying it on slightly damp skin helps it spread thinly and absorb comfortably.
  • On very shiny days, use it only on the cheeks and leave the T-zone free.

"Doctor, ghee on my face? My skin is already oily by noon!" I hear this almost every week, usually with a slightly horrified expression. It is a fair question. Kitchen ghee does not sound like something an oily-skin routine would welcome. But Shatadhauta Ghrita is not kitchen ghee, and with the right amount and timing, many of my patients with oily and combination skin use it happily.

What is Shatadhauta Ghrita?

"Shata" means one hundred and "dhauta" means washed. Pure cow ghee is washed in cold water one hundred times, traditionally in a copper or bronze vessel, with fresh water each round. The grainy yellow ghee slowly becomes a soft, white, whipped balm that melts at body temperature and feels much lighter on the skin.

What do the classical texts say about it?

Ghee is one of the most valued substances in Ayurveda, and the washed form has a special place in external care.

From the classical texts

The Charaka Samhita (Sutrasthana, Snehadhyaya) describes ghee as the finest of the unctuous substances for nourishing the body. Classical Ayurvedic literature describes Shatadhauta Ghrita as a cooling (sheeta) external application for the skin, prepared by repeated washing.

These passages describe traditional concepts, not modern medical claims.

How does oily skin fit with a ghee balm?

Oily skin still needs moisture. When it is stripped by harsh face washes, it often feels tight and looks shinier later in the day. A thin layer of a light, cooling balm at night keeps the skin comfortable. In Ayurvedic terms, oily, warm skin often reflects Pitta and Kapha, and the cooling nature of Shatadhauta Ghrita suits Pitta well. The key is using a little, not a lot.

How should oily skin use it?

Use less than you think. A rice-grain to pea-sized amount covers the whole face.

Choose the night. Apply after your evening cleanse so the skin has the whole night to absorb it.

Apply on slightly damp skin. Warm it between your fingertips and press it gently into the skin.

Focus on the cheeks. On very shiny days, apply it only where the skin feels dry and leave the T-zone free.

Keep the routine simple. Use it as your single night moisturiser rather than layering several rich creams.

Navtej Shatadhauta Ghrita is prepared by washing pure cow ghee one hundred times in the classical way. Use a small amount at night, or as advised by your physician.

These need proper evaluation. Always patch test a new product on your inner forearm first. If you have a known dairy allergy, a skin condition, or are taking medication, consult your doctor before starting, and never stop prescribed treatment.
